What You Need To Learn When Learning To Drive

by John Robertson on November 7, 2009

Some people who are learning to drive can become quit nervous. The person teaching the driving can become equally nervous. Lets imagine you have a nervous parent, can you imagine how nervous that parent will be while you are driving? You will probably end up with a nervous parent screaming, shouting, and just flat out freaking out. I am a nervous mother so I am speaking from experience.

Your experience while learning to drive can teach you a lot. The more time spent on honing your different skills in different conditions can help you to remain confident and calm while driving. You will also be more prepared and quicker to react to any challenging situation.

Getting a feel for the car is the first thing you want to do, so driving in an empty parking lot is a good place to start. You will want to practice your turning, and braking to learn how the car you are driving handles. Once you have mastered the basics such as driving, reversing, and braking then you can move on to the back roads to practice some more skills.

Back roads tend to have less traffic so they are usually safer for you and any other cars on the road. You want to be safe while you are learning techniques like slowing down for curves, coming to complete stops at all stop signs, following at a safe distance, turning left on two lane roads, and going uphill while at a constant speed.

Once you have learned the basic skills of driving it is time to move on to bigger and busier street. This is where you will learn proper lane changing and merging skills. You will also learn to keep at a safe speed, and use on and off ramps. Of course these are only a few driving techniques you will need to learn.

It is very important that you learn to anticipate and watch for potential problems from other motorist. You should always watch for cars that switch lanes without signaling or pull out in front of you. It can be hard as a new driver to anticipate other drivers actions or how much speed and space a certain situation will call for. Do not worry these safety habits will develop over time with experience.

When you have gotten comfortable with these skills you will need to start practicing in more conditions. Driving at dusk or dawn can be dangerous because of the glare the sun puts on the windshield, but you will need to practice this anyway. Driving at nighttime will greatly diminish your visibility but you should practice this as well. After that you will want to learn to drive at a safe speed on slick roads so you should practice in rainy or snowy weather.

Before you take off on your own you may want to learn things some of the maintenance necessities like how to: change a tire, pump gas, jump start a car, check air pressure in the tires. Once you have learned all the skills necessary then it is time to start driving. Remember to buckle up, check your seats and mirrors and always follow safety rules. Driving can be a wonderful experience if done correctly but can cause terrible problems when the safety rules are not followed.
