The Dangers Involved in Buying Pre-owned Automobile Parts

by Vic Hurlstorm on June 15, 2009

When trying to locate car spares, there are many ways that one can track down the components that are called for. Some methods are safe, and will cause no problems. But then again, some methods that auto parts are acquired are downright unsafe. One example of this is purchasing second-hand car spares from a scrap yard, or auto repair shop. All of these places usually sell used car spares that can be used when repairing your car. What’s scary, though, is the fact that some of these sometimes put used automobile spares in a car that’s going to be fixed, too, just in order to save the automobile repair place a little bit of money. But here are some of the dangers of buying used car parts if you aren’t knowledgable about them.

1. The History

When buying anything that’s second-hand you rarely know the history of the product. The same holds true for auto spares, unfortunately. Consider that when you buy auto spares from a junk yard you seldom know if that part has been through an auto accident and is a good enough part to put on your car. Even though most of the automobile spares that can be obtained through a junk or scrap yard are purchased at your own risk and without a guarantee, there are some major risks associated with doing this.

2. Reliability

As remarked, used auto parts can also be bought from auto repair shops. The truth at most auto repair shops is that the used car spares that are there are normally kept in one great pile in the back of the repair shop. If you buy a second-hand alternator from them then how would you know it is good to use? It is really possible that the car parts that are purchased from a repair shop are no good, or else if they are OK now automobile spares they may just break the next week. The car parts that can be acquired through an automobile repair shop or a car breakers are just too risky to warrant buying. Naturally, you may very well be proffered a refund or exchange if this were to happen, but the best course of action would be to stay away from used automobile spares entirely.

3. Being Cheated
Another likelihood, and perhaps the worst danger, is the danegr of being ripped off when buying used automobile spares. You could be sold parts that are not what they are described as, or that are older and more weakened than you are told. It is not important whether the car parts are for a used Ford or a used BMW , you need to be sure that you are getting a real manufacturer made component.

Even if you don’t buy the used car spares through a repair shop or a junk yard, if you do buy used car parts through a private dealer then you are always at risk of getting downright cheated. What is even more discomforting is the fact that you may never even be able to find the person ever again.

In the end, it doesn’t matter much whether or not the part really does work or not. The fact of the matter is that purchasing used auto spares is plain risky and dangerous. Even though loads of people do this daily, buying used car parts should be discouraged!
