How many days of the week can you go without driving your car?

by Roch Drives on April 11, 2007

Mr. PDQ asked:

Everyday we hop in our trusty cars and drive to the coffee shop, to work or to the corner store. Everyday we pollute the very planet that sustains our lives by driving that car. Can you take it as a personal challenge to walk to the coffee shop, to work or to the corner store and help save the planet just a bit? Today I did not drive my car one foot, and maybe I can do it again tomorrow. Maybe you can’t today or tomorrow but can you leave it parked and walk just one day? The planet will be happier for it.
To carguy, I vote we have a law which says one person, one vehicle. So what do you want the car or the truck or are you married to four women?

I can go 7 days this wk without driving my car…….I’ll just have to take the truck and waste more gas……but I can do it! I vote we have a law against liberals having computers.

Hey, I can make it 365 days a year. Of course I live in the high arctic and there are only 6 miles worth of roads in town. That and the temp is currently -45 and it takes about 40 minutes to heat a vechicle up to drivable condition. Also with only one store in town (which I work at), no coffeee shops, no theaters, no malls, just houses and my store, where ya gonna go. But at -45 I suggest you walk fast.

I can go all week and not drive any where if I really want to.
If we REALLY want to save the planet, then our net emission of carbon needs to be zero. We can do that by using more plant based fuels, such as bio-diesel. What the planet really needs is for people to live up to their ideas, and change to a more self sufficient way of life. Not using the car for a week, or what ever is the proverbial “drop in the bucket”. All those plastics that you buy, did they come from oil? If so, then there was a lot of pollution made to make those plastic things. Why did you buy those articles when you could have bought something made from wood. Is there man made fibers in the stuff that you wear, there is another source of pollution. Acetate is used in many blends for various things that we buy. It is literally everywhere. I know the process because I worked at a plant that made this stuff. More pollution there. Let’s not just pick on cars and trucks. True, they are the easily viewed “rascals”, but there are a lot of other sources of pollution that we can name, and buy alternatives for.

I see your point. But it’s just not practical for me to walk 3 miles to the store when I have a baby and today’s high temperature was 18 degrees (F).

Congrats to you for doing your part. Just because somebody drives their car, though, doesn’t mean they’re trying to destroy the planet (like me). They might be recycling, conserving water or energy at home, using alternative fuels…

Just don’t be too quick to judge :-)

I could walk to class I guess, but in order to make it tomorrow at noon i’ll have to leave now, as it’s a 40 mile walk.

I walk 2 miles to work whenever I have time to spare, but mostly because I don’t like starting up my car ( less wear)

And to the guy in the artic, can I suggest an engine block heater? lol

I rode the bus for two straight years and it ******. I only did it because i didn’t have a car. it reached 19 degrees up here in Milwaukee. I wouldn’t mind it if it was hot all the time but then again it takes an hour or more on the bus just to go 15 to 20 minutes. I did save a lot of money. If everybody rode the bus of train (subway) there would be so crowded and the cities would have to spend a lot of money for new buses and trains.

Well good for you, but unfortunately some of us don’t live down the street from everything, and our jobs aren’t in walking distance so we can’t. SO Mr. tree hugger what else do you do to contribute to the world you live in? do you wipe your rear end with your hand so you save a tree? or how about did you build a house out of sticks and rocks so not to disturb the wilderness? Or maybe you quit eating Hamburger because you heard a report that told you that cows are the #1 reason our O-zone layer is being ruined?
