Ford's Smart Hybrid Car - The Fusion

by Vic Hurlstorm on August 26, 2009

With the demise of the defunct Ford Taurus, there has been a gaping hole in Ford's midsized line-up which Toyota and honda just love to see.The public is really starting to notice the Fusion's new Hybrid power plant system in comparison to the original introduction in 2006.  Ford officially released the Fusion Hybrid recently at the Los Angeles Auto Show late in 2008.In comparison to competitors, the Ford Fusion Hybrid gets some of the best in-town gas mileage. The Environemetal Protection Agency gives the Fusion a rating of 41 Miles Per Gallon which is much better than the Toyota Camry, and even better than the fuel efficient Civic Hybrid; all this from a medium sized hybrid car.The electric engine can get the Ford moving and can continue to power the car up to a limit of 47 mile per hour before the gas engine kicks in.  Already there have been many automotive magazines that have employed this system to achieve much better MPG ratings then the EPA estimates.

The Fusion can teach drivers which driving style is best for maximum fuel economy by using new technology.Ford has made a smart feature built into the gauge cluster called the Smart Gauge.  There are 2 LCD screens located one on each side of the speedo which display 4 different information screens. The 1st display tells the power left in the battery packs and the remaining amount of fuel. The second gauge tells which mode the car in in; electric or hybrid, and it also shows the RPM's.The third monitor will tell how the battery power is and what the engine output is.Additional power consumption and power to the wheels are shown in the last data screen.Information Displays reveal fuel consumption, Miles Per Gallon account, journey record, and antifreeze levels. To inform the driver which driving style is the best for fuel economy, a real time MPG information gauge is available.

The nav screen shows the Hybrid Energy Flow data.A couple of different things will be displayed like the charge of the car, the various hybrid power systems, the regenerative braking, and the boost.

What is really cool about the Fusion is that ford used reclaimed yarns to make the seats, no other hybrid can claim this.Toyota and Honda have been selling thousands of hybrids per year unchallanged, better late than never with Ford.
