Could the sound I hear rattling in my 98 sunfire while i’m driving down the road be the windshield?

D DD asked:

I have a 98 Sunfire and a loud rattle is heard in the interior when driving down the road. I have been listening to this for years. I think the sound is coming from the dash but I often wonder if it is the front windshield.

I’m wondering if mechanics that work on these vehicles recognize this as a typical problem? If so, what is it?

Thanks!

Florence

Highly unlikely it the Windshield…….You should have it looked at for the Noise…It may be something Important

More likely it is a penny that fell into the defrost vent. A windshield that was loose enough to rattle is impossible, it would have fallen on you years ago.

Put your hand on what ever you think. And zero in then re ask.

If it is, in fact coming from the windshield, check the molding around the windshield for looseness. Otherwise, it is more than likely something loose in the dashboard, near the windshield.

Now this may seem like a Neanderthal thing to do, but pound on the dashboard with your fist and listen closely to where the sound is coming from. It could be a multitude of things, from loose radio screws, panel screws, loosed brackets, or even just something that has fallen down the dang defroster duct.

The two questions you need to answer when investigating this are:
1) Is the rattle a result of something that will affect the safety and or function of the car?
2) If question 1 has resulted in “No”, then what is your tolerance for such a noise and is it worth tearing into it and repairing it, or, just turn up the stereo?
