Can penalties on a driving record permanent, or do they dissappear for a certain amount of years?

I was wondering if you have a bad driving record and ur trying to get good insurance, how long would the accidents or tickets stay on your driving record? Just like something on your credit report staying for 7 yrs, is it similar rules to a driving record??
I live in the state of new york. I was wondering how long it takes for accidents off a bad driving record to dissapear? just in case i want insurance, I was just asking about it.
